For over a year now, the hum of my sewing machine, the gleam of a newly polished silver, the careful stitch repairing a seam – these are the sounds and sights of my daily life as a conscious stylist here in Southern California. Avery Greenery has roots that stretch far beyond the desert landscape, across oceans and lands. This has been a passion project of mine ever since I can remember, I wanted to learn how to sew.

My recent trip East was everything, particularly my time spent immersed in Osaka, Japan. I encountered the profound beauty of wabi-sabi up close and personal. More than just an aesthetic, wabi-sabi is a worldview, a way of finding perfection in imperfection, beauty in transience, and a deep appreciation for the history and character of an object. The cracked teacup lovingly repaired with gold (kintsugi), the weathered wood of an ancient building, the subtle asymmetry of a hand-thrown bowl – all spoke volumes about embracing flaws and celebrating the journey of time.

I noticed how I wasn't judging my work as deeply as before, I felt freedom in creating again.

This resonated deeply with my work in upcycling and repairing luxury items. I was able to make many friends while traveling who also share love for thrifted fashion. For too long, fashion has been obsessed with the flawless and the new, contributing to a cycle of consumption and waste that feels increasingly unsustainable. But what if we shifted our perspective? Not for any other reason than, there already enough. What if we saw the little imperfections – a scuff on a vintage handbag, a snag in a delicate knit – not as flaws to be discarded, but as stories waiting to be continued? Art waiting to happen?

In Japan, the art of kintsugi elevates the repair process to an art form. The broken pieces aren't simply glued back together; the cracks are highlighted with precious metal, turning damage into a unique and beautiful feature. This philosophy has become a cornerstone of my approach at Avery Greenery. When I meticulously repair a luxury item, I'm not just restoring it to its former glory; I'm honoring its past and adding a new chapter to its story.

Upcycling takes this concept a step further. It's about seeing the inherent potential in discarded materials and transforming them into something entirely new and valuable. An old silk scarf can become a vibrant trim on a jacket, vintage denim can be reimagined into a patchwork masterpiece, and forgotten fabrics can be stitched together to create one-of-a-kind costumes. It’s about creativity born from resourcefulness, a belief that beauty can emerge from what others have overlooked.

Bringing the spirit of wabi-sabi into my daily life here in Southern California, I see a growing desire for more conscious consumption. People are seeking unique pieces with soul, items that tell a story beyond fleeting trends. They are recognizing the value in craftsmanship and the inherent beauty of imperfection.

Avery Greenery is more than just a business; it’s a reflection of this evolving mindset. It’s a long time coming, a space where luxury and sustainability intertwine, where repair is an act of love, and upcycling is a form of artistic expression.

It's about embracing the imperfections of fashion – recognizing the beauty, celebrating the unique character of each piece, and breathing new life into the treasures we already possess. Join me in reimagining fashion, one stitch, one mend, one upcycled creation at a time. ♡
